The US election should prove to be interesting. With McCain squaring off against Obama, the voters are left with a moderate who grabs conservative democrats and a liberal who energizes less conservative republicans. The great fear is that an attempt on Obama would destroy the democratic party the way that Bobby's death in 68 did.
If there were factions in the Republican party willing to skate yet another scandal, they might make a false attempt on McCain to rally sympathy and if they pin it on an Arab extremist it may send the message to the undecided that McCain somehow poses a threat to Al Qaida and his election would make America safer. There also needs to be a near successful attack in the US in either Los Angeles or Washington DC at a time when Obama is ahead in the polling -which they could spin as "the enemy anticipated an Obama victory, and they don't fear him." Both of these events would have to be in September or October for it to truly impact election outcome.
