Toshiba TEC Europe has introduced its ultra-fast RFID modules for Auto ID label printers to significantly increase the overall throughput for standard label applications.

The Toshiba TEC said that the RFID modules will significantly increase the overall throughput for standard label applications.

In tests, the time required to encode the tags has been shown to have halved, said Toshiba TEC.

"The TOSHIBA TEC RFID-ready label printers form a unique and powerful solution; they empower supply chain operations, providing RFID printing, without the need for software or hardware modifications to the printer," said Angel de Juan, European director, Auto ID Division, Toshiba.

"Leveraging our in-house technology to deliver high-performance, high-productivity products helps our customers meet and exceed their strategic objectives".

RFID modules development - Toshiba TEC told manufacturingtalk that it is one of the few global technology vendors that still design, develop, manufacture and despatch in-house.

The pioneering UHF RFID modules operate under EPC Gen 2 UHF technology standards.

The company said that users can take advantage of the serious business benefits including the following.

* Optimised performance in different regulatory environments.

* Read/write field programmability.

* Faster tag read/write rates.

* Operability in dense reader environments.

* Migration to future EPC classes.

On top of the standard RFID characteristics Toshiba TEC has added two new innovations, Gray Area Detection and SPRiNT Gen 2 Printing.

RFID tags that operate well in a printing environment are occasionally unable to maintain a high level of performance throughout the whole supply chain, said Toshiba TEC.

Gray Area Detection (Patent pending) measures the reflected power of the tag and ensures that only tags that meet the set requirements will be programmed.

If the reflected power output of the RFID tag is too low to be reliably detected by RFID readers, the printer treats such tags as void and marks them as non-functioning and therefore helps to decrease the field error rate in a live situation.

Toshiba TEC first developed its unique Short Pitch RFID Encoding Technology (SPRiNT) in 2005 in order to achieve acceleration of RFID-based business processes and is now launching the next generation of this innovative technology SPRiNT Gen 2.

Achieving a significantly higher throughput of short pitch labels when producing large batches of RFID tags, SPRiNT Gen 2 dramatically reduces the cost of implementation for some RFID applications.

Added to this it provides users with a data processing performance that is twice the speed of existing Toshiba TEC RFID modules.

The process is simple, data is written onto one RFID tag, this tag is then moved to its print position, data is then written onto the next tag whilst printing is completed on the first and so on until the batch is completed.
