Bilderberg Club: The Brave World of the Powerful

In truth, `Bilderberg Club - The Rulers of the World` by Daniel Estulin is not available in bookstores.

Temas & Debates and Circulo de Leitores published in 2005 the book “Bilderberg Club – The Rulers of the World” by Daniel Estulin, a Canadian journalist living in Spain. The book deals with the secret activities of the Bilderberg, of which the author believes is a group that holds the future of the world in its hands. A touchy subject - involving prime ministers, presidents, bankers, mass media bosses and international corporations.

The author bases his allegations in the investigations he has conducted over the course of several years on this group of elected few, like Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger or David Rockfeller. A wheel of “friends” that has included the presence of a few Portuguese in their closed door meetings. He mentions Pinto Balsemao, Jorge Sampaio, Jose Socrates, Durao Barroso, Santana Lopes and others (see his interview in www.semanario.pt). In “Bilderberg Club – The Rulers of the World”, Estulin tries to dismantle its structure and to prove how it manipulates and coordinates events at a world level.

On behalf of his book in 2006, Estulin circulated on the Internet the notion that the Portuguese editors had been subjected to “strong pressures by members of the government to remove the book from the market”. According to the author, there was a fear that it would happen in Portugal the way it happened in Venezuela, Mexico or Colombia, countries in which the first editions of the book “had sold out in hours” and brought about “popular demonstrations near the North-American embassies”.

Estulin’s communiqué was sent to many Portuguese bloggers, Flavio Goncalves was one of them. Goncalves is one of those that believe in the journalist's version of the facts. He considers the book to be “credible” due to the “dates and data that were presented”. Goncalves finds the publisher's behaviour strange as it “removed the public version of the book, keeping in print solely the edition of Circulo de Leitores [1], available for members only”.

The author of opinion articles in several Azorean newspapers and a journalist for an international news agency [2], Flavio Goncalves discards the version of the publisher that the title was pulled off the market for lack of sales. “If that was true his new book would not have reached the third edition [3]. Not only that but, in FNAC, the first book is still available in Spanish and it keeps on selling.”

In truth, “Bilderberg Club – The Rulers of the World” is not available in stores. Over a telephone conversation, Estulin told Focus “at the time, a friend of mine secretly recorded a conservation with the editor, during which the editor confessed to him that he had been subjected to enormous pressure to get the book removed from the market”. Going further, he specified, based on information from “another friend”, that it was Pinto Balsemao behind the removal of the book. [4]

The boss of SIC [5], contacted by Focus, made excuses for not making any sort of comments regarding the book or its content about the Bilderberg Club, as he's been a member for many years, according to Estulin. Regarding the accusation of being the one responsible for the alleged boycott, Balsemao answered solely with “it’s not true”. No further elaboration.

One of Estulin’s supporters is Journalist Frederico Duarte Carvalho, who is the author of the book “I Know You Know”, dealing with the same subject. “What he says makes sense because the book disappeared, really, from the bookshelves. It sold out and there was no announcement of a republication.”

It’s precisely the lack of buyers in bookstores cited as the reason worded by Guilhermina Gomes, editorial manager of Temas & Debates/Circulo de Leitores. “For this publisher the order to republish a work is issued by the marketing section, which is done based upon what the stores are selling. If a book doesn’t sell properly we do not republish it.”

Responding to the accusation of outside pressure to remove the book from the market, Guilhermina Gomes finds it “an extraordinary theory, unusual and unglamorous”, whose motive she says she is not aware of. “We have published disturbing books in the past and we never had a situation like this one”, she explains pointing out that the Circulo de Leitores is “in business for over 40 years and we are known for our honesty, straightforwardness and the care we have for our authors.”
