It has been a tradition that Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) ask questions about Bilderberg. For instance:

Answer given by Mr Barroso on behalf of the Commission
Under Article 10 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This right includes freedom to change religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or in private, to manifest religion or belief, in worship, teaching, practice and observance.
The exercise of this fundamental right by the Members of the Commission must not conflict with their obligation of independence under Article 213(2) of the EC Treaty.
As regards the attendance by Members of the Commission at meetings of the ‘Bilderberg Group’, the Commission would refer the Honourable Member to the answers it has already given to other written questions on the same subject(1).

1. Did the President, Mr Van Rompuy, attend the Bilderberg meeting in St Moritz between 9 and 12 June 2011?
If so:
2. Who invited him?
3. Was the invitation in his capacity as President of the Council, or was it in a personal capacity?
4. Who paid for his travel, accommodation and incidental expenses?
5. Did Mr Van Rompuy contribute in any way to the meeting? If so, what was his contribution?
6. Did Mr Van Rompuy accept any action points to follow up after the meeting?
7. Will Mr Van Rompuy commit to publicly stating if and when he is invited and attends future meetings of the Bilderberg group? |

The President of the European Council attended the Bilderberg meeting in St Moritz on the evening of 10 June and the morning of 11 June, at the invitation of the organisers.
The President did not speak on behalf of the European Council at this event. He stopped over on his way back from an official meeting and there were therefore no travel costs specifically incurred in travelling between Brussels and St Moritz for this event.
The President of the European Council chaired one of the discussion sessions. He also had bilateral meetings with national leaders and institutional actors in the margin of this event. The President did not accept any action points to follow up after the meeting.
Concerning the Honourable Member's last question, the President of the European Council has always acknowledged his attendance at events of various kinds organised by third parties. |
What is surprising is that in the current term (2014-2019) no single new MEP questions on the topic have been filed while before there were at least 5-6 questions about Bilderberg per term, in the term 2009-2014 32 questions. MEPs are not limited as to how many written questions they may pose at the institutions, that is Council (of ministers) and European Commission.
