Identity Chips, Human implants - voluntary. (Predictions Part 3)

The next step, which one might imagine is a little further off… You would expect would cause a bit more furor But isn’t, is the chipping of people.
The one most beneficial point I think of an RFID implant is that it is so much better than biometrics, such as finger / thumb printing or retina scans, simply because an Implant can be removed or disabled, without adversely affecting your life, whereas a print or retina scan cannot.
After my original research I had written an article that talked about what would be happening, however after further research, what I thought would happen, is in effect already happening, I have come across an absolute flood of information, so will continue to discuss the human ramifications over the next couple of articles.
All around the world there are governments, corporations, organizations and individuals having people chipped, at this stage from what I can discover this is largely done to people who have given consent, however this is not the full story and is likely to get worse,
A quick Google search will reveal a number of proposals in action around the world ranging from having the homeless chipped, to having immigrants chipped, to companies that require employees to have a chip implanted.
(That same Google search will also reveal a large number of sites that are either conspiracy theorists, very religiously motivated, or both and discuss the fact that RFID is apparently the mark of the beast, these make an interesting read if nothing else, with a range from scientific and evidence based (around the rfid’s) with a religious interpretation, right the way through to complete fanciful fanatics.)
There are also large number of people having RFID’s implanted into themselves, not only consenting but actually requesting to have this done.
Mostly it is either in the hand - easy to remove – according to a number of sources you can scratch away at the area of skin and remove the chip much like a splinter

For the more formal applications, esp. health it is implanted in the right arm above the triceps muscle, (except in the case of an amputee who would then have it implanted in the same place in the left arm.)
This particular method of implant is still easily done with what is effectively a large needle, inserting a glass tube about the size of two grains of rice, however the removal requires a surgical procedure, albeit a minor one.

Why would you request to have this done? There are many reasons – mostly around convenience:

Automotive.
Disable the alarm and unlock the car by grabbing the door handle,
Similarly, swipe your hand past a reader in the front quarter panel to lock the door.
Remove the need for a key in the ignition, simply have a reader on the steering wheel and a “start” button

Work place,
Never forget your security card again, move your hand past a sensor and you are in.
Unlocking your workstation, - simply sit down at your workstation, grab the mouse or keyboard ( with a built in reader)

Health / Tracking / capitalizing on the fear of terror in the US
Over in the US, and possibly a number of other places, there are companies pushing multiple chipping packages, that will chip each significant body part, in the event of the Worst happening, (eg, you are blown to pieces)

Declaration of love
Why not have chips instead of wedding rings? This couple have used RFID to give each other complete access to their lives – the lady involved thinks that the implantation has a romantic appeal to it… apparently
http://www.rfidgazette.org/2006/02/love_struck_cou.html

Health reasons,
Around the world, according to Verichip, there are more than 2,000 people with implants being monitored,
They also state the RFID implant technology helps doctors and hospitals high-risk patients.
One of the large concerns about the implantation of RFID’s is medical, all privacy aside,
For medical tracking they have an establish place for the RFIDs (as mentioned above) however for consumer requested implants it becomes a real risk,
For instance, if you are in a car accident and the hospital needs to perform and MRI, the magnetic forces could not only destroy the chip, but cause you serious burns or worse kill you.

50/50 Prediction:
Either:
it will become a requirement / strong recommendation to have a small tattoo in a standardized place so that it can be seen that you have an RFID implant on your person – in the event of emergencies.
OR:
It will not be necessary as the sensitivity of the readers / detectors will be such that they will be able to pick up any RFID on a persons body with near-flawless precision.

Prediction: - Should the voluntary implantation of RFID become widespread it will not be long before those that don’t want an implant are encountering social / work / government / peer pressure to have the implant, or worse yet, actually being ostracized due to the lack of chip.

And the list goes on, there are so many places that RFID is appearing, in every way shape or form.

Part 4 will continue to discuss the above and other ramifications, along with discussions currently happening regarding the privacy of individuals.

Whitehall moves to create 'superdatabase'
14th January 2007
http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=428701&in_page_id=1770

A huge Whitehall 'superdatabase' of people's personal details could be created in a bid to improve public services, it was revealed.

The move would mean relaxing regulations that restrict different parts of government from sharing information.

Minsters believe the current rules are overly tough, and changing them could help make the NHS and benefits system more efficient.

Individuals would only have to give their details once rather than handing them to a host of different agencies.

The process of notifying a loved one's death could also be made a lot simpler and less distressing for bereaved families.

However, the proposal is likely to encounter resistance from civil liberties groups who fear the creation of a 'Big Brother' state.

Information Commissioner Richard Thomas has already warned that Britain may be "sleepwalking into a surveillance society".

The database idea has emerged from the Government's policy review on public services, which is headed by Work and Pensions Secretary John Hutton.

So-called "citizens panels" will be used to gauge public reaction to relaxing privacy procedures.

Shadow home secretary David Davis said the database was likely to be a "white elephant" costing £20 billion.

He criticised the Government's record on managing databases, citing failures in the Sex Offenders Register, the Criminal Records Bureau, and the recent problems tracking criminal records from overseas.

He said the money could much better be spent on policing or border controls.

"The chances of it actually solving crimes is pretty small," he said.

"The chances of it costing over £20 billion is very high. It will be a white elephant."

"We could spend that money much better: on border controls, policing - you name it."
