The year 2018 has opened with an international campaign to censor the Internet. Throughout the world, technology giants are responding to the political demands of governments by cracking down on freedom of speech, which is inscribed in the US Bill of Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, and countless international agreements.

Bloomberg, the financial news service, published a blog post titled “Welcome to 2018, the Year of Censored Social Media,” which began with the observation, “This year, don’t count on the social networks to provide its core service: an uncensored platform for every imaginable view. The censorship has already begun, and it’ll only get heavier.”

Developments over the past week include:

On January 1, the German government began implementation of its “Network Enforcement Law,” which threatens social media companies with fines of up to €50 million if they do not immediately remove content deemed objectionable. Both German trade groups and the United Nations have warned that the law will incentivize technology companies to ban protected speech.

On January 3, French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to introduce a ban during election cycles on what he called “fake news” in a further crackdown on free speech on top of the draconian measures implemented under the state of emergency. The moves by France and Germany have led to renewed calls for a censorship law applying to the entire European Union.

On December 28, the New York Times reported that Facebook had deleted the account of Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen Republic, nominally because he had been added to a US sanctions list. As the American Civil Liberties Union pointed out, this creates a precedent for giving the US government essentially free rein to block freedom of expression all over the world simply by putting individuals on an economic sanctions list.

This week, Iranian authorities blocked social media networks, including Instagram, which were being used to organize demonstrations against inequality and unemployment.

Facebook has continued its crackdown on Palestinian Facebook accounts, removing over 100 accounts at the request of Israeli officials.

These moves come in the wake of the decision by the Trump administration to abolish net neutrality, giving technology companies license to censor and block access to websites and services.

In August, the World Socialist Web Site first reported that Google was censoring left-wing, anti-war, and progressive websites. When it implemented changes to its search algorithms, Google claimed they were politically neutral, aimed only at elevating “more authoritative content” and demoting “blatantly misleading, low quality, offensive or downright false information.”

Now, no one can claim that the major technology giants are not carrying out a widespread and systematic campaign of online censorship, in close and active coordination with powerful states and intelligence agencies.

In the five months since the WSWS released its findings, Google’s censorship of left-wing, anti-war, and progressive web sites has only intensified.

Even though the World Socialist Web Site's readership from direct entries and other websites has increased, Google’s effort to isolate the WSWS through the systematic removal of its articles from search results has continued to depress its search traffic. Search traffic to the WSWS, which fell more than any other left-wing site, has continued to trend down, with a total reduction of 75 percent, compared to a 67 percent decline in August.

Alternet.org’s search traffic is now down 71 percent, compared to 63 percent in August. Consortium News’s search traffic is down 72 percent, compared to 47 percent in August. Other sites, including Global Research and Truthdig, continue to see significantly depressed levels of search traffic.

In its statement to commemorate the beginning of the new year, the World Socialist Web Site noted, “The year 2018—the bicentenary of Marx’s birth—will be characterized, above all, by an immense intensification of… class conflict around the world.” This prediction has been confirmed in the form of mass demonstrations in Iran, the wildcat strike by auto workers in Romania and growing labour militancy throughout Europe and the Middle East.

The ruling elites all over the world are meeting this resurgence of class struggle with an attempt to stifle and suppress freedom of expression on the Internet, under the false pretence of fighting “fake news” and “foreign propaganda.”

"Genuine journalism must now compete with content that mimics it and dresses deceit in a cloak of credibility, while society must adapt to a world in which fact and falsehood are increasingly difficult to tell apart," said an exhaustive report by Canada's Public Policy Forum entitled The Shattered Mirror: News, Democracy and Trust in the Digital Age.

"An information market polluted this way puts the very notion of credibility at risk."

Most of the forum's recommendations went nowhere. The federal budget will pump $50 million into local journalism, but supporters in the industry say it comes nowhere near to what the Canadian media needs to fully adapt to the digital age.

The Liberals promised $10 million a year over the next five years to support local journalism in under-served areas and committed the government to looking at new models to enable private donations and philanthropic support for non-profit journalism and local news.

In defending their position on the media, Trudeau and his ministers have pointed to the government's investments in CBC News.

But many studies, particularly in the U.S., have noted that the weakened state of so-called traditional media is a danger to democracy that must be recognized.

"First and foremost, the leadership of the United States must acknowledge that political warfare strategies are being implemented by regional powers, including Russia, that seek to shift the current balance of geopolitical power in their favor," said an analysis written in June 2015 by the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.

CGI did this to me and my sons when my sons were in jr. high, showing up at my children's school without any notice and dragging them off to rooms all by themselves and harassing and threatening them to try and get them to give them something they could use to discredit me - keeping in mind that CGI employ a large number of ex-intelligence and ex-military personnel, including those involved in the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse, so their interrogation tactics are advanced and highly unethical and abusive - but there wasn't anything bad to tell, so CGI got nothing from unlawfully seriously frightening and traumatizing my children, while illegally impersonating people committed to protecting children. When my children came home and told me what had been done to them, I immediately filed a formal request for the record of their interrogation of my children - because my sons told me they had treated them very abusively, and said many improper things to them - but they told me I was not entitled to this evidence, even though my sons were minors and I was their legal guardian, and even though there was never any grounds for this investigation.

CGI then phoned my ex-husband (hoping of all people he would be more than willing to bad-mouth me), as well as my friends, to try and get dirt on me - fraudulently lying to them about who they were and asking them leading questions, like did I drink or had I ever done drugs, and am I mentally stable, etc., trying to get them to say something negative about me, but none of them did. In fact everyone they spoke to told them nothing but very positive things about me, very much including my ex-husband, as the documents relating to this fraudulent investigation prove.

CGI then began phoning me over and over again, threatening and harassing me non-stop, including threatening to take my jr. high aged children away from me when they had no grounds to - and they even admitted this fact during these calls - but I audio recorded their unlawful harassment and threats and then called them back after hours and left them messages of the recordings I had made of them threatening and harassing me, to make it clear to them that I had the evidence proving their crimes against me, including that their child welfare investigation was fraudulent. CGI then had no choice but to close their fraudulent child welfare investigation in my favour, as the evidence I have proves.

What would have happened to me and my children if I hadn't thought to audio record CGI's criminal actions? Further consider that CGI are much more powerful now than they were when this happened.

What's also very important to know is that people being harassed by CGI won't know it's CGI and the Bilderberg Group harassing them in most cases, because CGI use their extremely extensive contracts with governments and law enforcement agencies, etc. across North America and around the world to unlawfully harass people - so in this case it was Calgary Children's Services that appeared to be harassing me for no reason, but when I investigated who was really behind it I discovered the evidence proving it was CGI who had used their contract with Calgary Children's Services to unlawfully harass me and my children.

Another unlawful thing CGI did was use their contracts with Calgary emergency services to harass and threaten me, and to try and fabricate that I had a history of mental illness and to try and have me wrongfully committed by sending the police and paramedics to my home, who then forced their way in, telling me that they had received a report - but refused to say who from - that I was mentally ill and a threat to myself, when I have no history of mental illness and had done absolutely nothing wrong. Two Calgary police officers then insisted on unlawfully searching my home, because they said they had to make sure everything was okay, and found my home to be immaculate as I always keep it and absolutely nothing wrong, so they then told me that I had to submit to a physical examination by the paramedic they brought into my home with them, while they interrogated my children, who again were terrified and traumatized by being subjected to this horrifying experience.

There was a male and female police officer, and the entire time the male officer was on the phone with someone - that the evidence supports was working for CGI - who was pressuring him to take me into custody, even though I had done absolutely nothing wrong and there was no reason to. When the male police officer asked the paramedic if he had found anything wrong with me, the male paramedic who had examined me said no, only that my blood pressure was up slightly, which was clearly as a result of me and my children being subjected to an unlawful home invasion, and me being faced with being wrongfully taken away, away from my children, which the paramedic and female officer acknowledged was understandable and normal considering what I was being subjected to.

Yet despite there being no evidence to support taking me away, I clearly heard a male voice on the other end of the phone ordering the male police officer to take me into custody immediately, so he moved towards me to grab a hold of me, but the female officer blocked him and told him no, trying to protect me, and the male paramedic said he wanted nothing to do with this and left my home. The male officer looking very frustrated then turned and told the person on the phone that he couldn't do what they wanted because there was no grounds to, and while the male officer argued with the person on the phone who was clearly still trying to get him to wrongfully take me into custody, the female officer named Kelly pulled me into my kitchen and told me that she believed someone was trying to hurt me and I needed to try and get help, so she encouraged me to try calling tv and radio stations to see if I could get my story out there so that maybe that would protect me. She then persuaded the male officer to leave my home with her.

Outrageously, I then received a bill for the cost of CGI unlawfully sending an ambulance and paramedic to my home to try and have me wrongfully committed to shut me up and cover up their crimes, and responded to this bill by telling them to bill CGI, since they were behind the fraudulent report that resulted in the ambulance and paramedic being sent to my home, and that they wouldn't have any trouble locating them since they had contracts with the Calgary police and ambulance services.

I then received a letter back from the City of Calgary (very likely from a CGI employee under contract to work for the City of Calgary) telling me that I didn't have to pay this bill because of the circumstances I reported to them, which I saved as evidence, along with the fraudulent bill, proving what CGI tried to do to me, along with the audio recording I have of this entire incident, which my ex-husband also witnessed along with me and my children, because I called him immediately when it started happening and stayed on the phone with him the entire time it was happening, so he heard everything.

"New York prepares military-style occupation for New Year’s celebration in Times Square

Police and other security forces will be deployed in record numbers for New York City’s traditional New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square on Sunday night. According to New York Police Department (NYPD) officials, the number of uniformed police deployed in an around the Manhattan landmark will exceed last year’s 5,000.

City police, many decked out in full combat gear, will be augmented by state police and FBI personnel. Police on the ground will be supplemented by police snipers in surrounding high-rise buildings as well as bomb-sniffing “vapor wake dogs.” Officers will be patrolling hotels in advance of the ball drop.

There will be multiple check points through which those seeking to attend the event will have to pass and widespread checking of bags and other personal belongings of people in Times Square and at nearby subway stations and transit points. Attendees will be herded into 65 fenced-in “viewing pens” surrounded by phalanxes of heavily armed police.

A fleet of 65 large, sand-filled dump trucks, 100 blocker vehicles and other physical barriers will be used to create a fortress ring surrounding the venue, encompassing an area 22 city blocks long and 3 blocks wide. All 125 parking garages in the vicinity will be shut and sealed until Monday.

Huge throngs of revelers typically gather in the center of Manhattan for the annual event. The estimate for last year was two million. This year, in the wake of a number of recent terror attacks in New York and elsewhere, the police presence will be even greater than in previous years, turning Times Square into a veritable armed camp.

An atmosphere of anxiety and fear is being promoted in order to justify the unprecedented mobilization. The federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has assigned the event its highest security threat designation—“SEAR 1” —which is usually given to very high-profile events such as political conventions and the National Football League’s Super Bowl, allowing the allocation of additional resources. This is in spite of the fact that New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill told a press conference Thursday, “There are no direct credible threats to New York City, to Times Square specifically, or to any of our New Year’s Eve events generally.”

In a television interview, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Newsmax TV, “There is a credible threat against the country in general by ISIS, Al Qaeda and these radical Islamic groups, that is credible. They tell us constantly they’re coming, they want to do damage, they want to do harm, they want to cause death and destruction.”

New York’s Democratic mayor, Bill de Blasio, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Terrorists regard New York as the exact kind of place they want to disrupt…”

According to news reports, the police are preparing for a variety of possible threats, such as snipers and suicide bombers. People seeking to enter Times Square will be forced to run a gauntlet of security at 12 separate access points. Measures will include two tiers of security checkpoints at which people will be subjected to physical searches and screening by metal and radiation detectors. Plainclothes officers will be mixing with the celebrants.

James Waters, the NYPD chief of counterterrorism, stated, “You will see an increase in heavy weapons, bomb squad personnel, radiological detection teams, and our technology to include over 1,000 cameras in and around the area of Times Square for the event.”

Similar measures will be taken at other New Year’s Eve celebrations around the city, including fireworks displays in Central Park and Coney Island.

Other cities such as Chicago, Miami and San Francisco are also carrying out heightened security measures for their New Year’s Eve festivities, though none report specific threats. In Las Vegas, where the October 1 mass shooting, not linked to foreign terrorism, caused 58 deaths and hundreds of injuries, 300 National Guard troops and over 1,500 police will be deployed. As with New York, the DHS has raised the Las Vegas event to its highest security level.

There is an immense element of hypocrisy in the official attempts to justify such repressive and in many cases unconstitutional measures with warnings about possible terror attacks. This has been used since the launching of the “war on terror” more than 16 years ago to attack democratic rights and build up the infrastructure of a police state. The media and the entire political establishment work to accustom the population to the intrusive and menacing presence of heavily armed police in public places.

Groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda are, in fact, the direct product of US imperialist interventions in the Middle East and Central Asia. The US surreptitiously arms and supports such groups as proxy forces in its drive to impose more compliant leaders in places such as Libya and Syria through regime-change. Attacks on the US and Europe by individuals affiliated with or inspired by such groups—in virtually every case people who are well known to the police and intelligence agencies—are rooted in the massive human suffering and social destruction wrought by imperialist interventions throughout the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa.

In a city such as New York, the home of Wall Street and the financial aristocracy, on the one hand, and millions living in grinding poverty, on the other—where 60,000 people spend each night in homeless shelters and thousands more on the streets—the militarized police operation on New Year’s Eve is bound up with fears within the ruling class of the growth in social opposition. It takes on the character of a dry run for mass repression and martial law."

‘No Cash’ Signs Everywhere Has Sweden Worried It’s Gone Too Far

"No cash accepted” signs are becoming an increasingly common sight in shops and eateries across Sweden as payments go digital and mobile.

But the pace at which cash is vanishing has authorities worried. A broad review of central bank legislation that’s under way is now taking a special look at the situation, with an interim report due as early as the summer.
“If this development with cash disappearing happens too fast, it can be difficult to maintain the infrastructure” for handling cash, said Mats Dillen, the head of the parliamentary review. He declined to give more details on the types of proposals that could be included in the report.

Sweden is widely regarded as the most cashless society on the planet. Most of the country’s bank branches have stopped handling cash; many shops, museums and restaurants now only accept plastic or mobile payments. But there’s a downside, since many people, in particular the elderly, don’t have access to the digital society.

“One may get into a negative spiral which can threaten the cash infrastructure,” Dillen said. “It’s those types of issues we are looking more closely at.”

Last year, the amount of cash in circulation in Sweden dropped to the lowest level since 1990 and is more than 40 percent below its 2007 peak. The declines in 2016 and 2017 were the biggest on record.

An annual survey by Insight Intelligence released last month found that only 25 percent of Swedes paid in cash at least once a week in 2017, down from 63 percent just four years ago. A full 36 percent never use cash, or just pay with it once or twice a year.

In response, the central bank is considering whether there’s a need for an official form of digital currency, an e-krona. A final proposal isn’t expected until late next year, but the idea is that the e-krona would work as a complement to cash, not replace it completely.

Riksbank Governor Stefan Ingves has said Sweden should consider forcing banks to provide cash to customers. In its annual report on Monday, the Riksbank said the question is what role it should play in a future with even fewer cash payments.

“The Riksbank is carefully analyzing this development,” Ingves said. “Overall, I think we are facing structural changes in areas that have previously been stable. This is a development which will affect all the Riksbank’s departments and we will need to make strategic decisions regarding the way forward.”"
