UN chief calls for enhancing intercultural dialogue
ASSOCIATED PRESS OF PAKISTAN (APP) - May 11, 2007
UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon Thursday called on member states to conduct "sustained and constructive" dialogue between different cultures.
Speaking at the 61st General Assembly's informal thematic debate entitled "Civilisations and the Challenges for Peace: Obstacles and Opportunities," Ban said the meeting comes at a time of rising intolerance and growing cross-cultural tensions. - - -
The UN chief stressed that there is an urgent need to rebuild bridges and to enter into a sustained and constructive intercultural dialogue, one that stresses common values and shared aspirations.
"In response, we need to reassert the truth that diversity is a virtue, not a threat. Indeed, it is the very essence of human condition, and a driver of human progress," he added.
Ban called on the media, religions and individuals to work for mutual respect as the meeting on co- existence opened in New York. - - - -
