Bilderberg Conference very hush-hush

QUESTION: I see that Gov. Rick Perry attended the latest meeting, in Turkey, of a group called Bilderberg. Conspiracy-type articles say it is more powerful than the Group of Eight. What is the Bilderberg? I did not see anything in the local newspapers about our governor's attendance.
ANSWER: Keep this just between you and me, because the Bilderberg Conference is very hush-hush. It doesn't even have a Web site. But there are plenty of reliable Web sites that point out the secrecy surrounding it.
The invitation-only conference first met in 1954 at the Hotel de Bilderberg in the Netherlands and took its name from there. The meetings occur annually, completely taking over four and five star hotels and resorts.
Occasionally the attendee list is leaked, so it's known that the group includes influential people \u2014 heads of state, present and former government officials, other politicians, royalty, corporate officers, financiers, academics, media, European Union commissioners and international organization officials. This year's conference had about 130 attendees.
The reason for the secrecy is to allow the members to speak frankly without fear of publication. Everyone agrees not to reveal what is discussed, but there are no resolutions, no conclusions and no action is taken by the group. It began meeting in an effort to promote greater understanding between western Europe and the United States, but has expanded to discussion of world events, economy, foreign policy and other such matters. It gives the members a chance to hear the policies, theories and plans of the others.
Perry was invited to speak about state-federal relations. |
